Compulsory registration of all Births, Deaths & Marriages
in Scotland was introduced in 1855 and these records
are held by the
General Register Office for Scotland in
Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh.

The General Register Office also hold parish registers
preceding 1855.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons)
have a massive database of genealogical records.

A visit to these sites should be high on your list of priorities but
the majority of links on this page are dedicated genealogy sites,
most with a distinctly Scottish bias where possible.
Help pages for those beginning family research are usually included
and much fruitless searching can be avoided by following

Most general topics are covered on a county basis, but also
on a more specific level, such as parish, town or village.

Material includes Statistical Accounts...one for each parish in the 1790s, 1830s and 1950s
and one county volume published in 2003, with parish volumes in preparation.

Town guides and tourist guides from the mid-nineteenth century,
scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings, county development plans
(post World War II) and census data.

Unpublished in-house subject index available for books, documents,
